V INTERNATIONAL CHOIR FESTIVAL MUNDUS CANTAT SOPOT 2009

20-24 May 2009
Final Gala at the Forest Opera in Sopot
Auditions and additional concerts in Sopot churches

In 2009 Sopot will invite singers from many countries for the fifth time. Festival Mundus Cantat is a musical event unique in our country. Choirs from all over the world take part in it and prizes are awarded in different categories: sacral music, folk music, gospel, jazz and spirituals. In previous editions we have hosted more than 2 thousands participants from 18 countries: Columbia, Philippines, Singapore, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Sopot Chamber Choir Continuo, the Baltic Artistic Agency BART and the Sopot Municipal Council have permanently been the organizers of the festival. The artistic director of the event is a highly regarded Marcin Tomczak, the professor and the pro-vice chancellor of the Gdansk Music Academy.
Every year the festival is inaugurated by a colorful parade of choir members wearing picturesque clothes in Monte Cassino Street and the opening ceremony on the Sopot Pier. Competition auditions are held in Sopot churches and the final concert takes place in the Forest Opera. There the jury’s verdict is announced.
During the last year edition the participants performed in Gdynia, Gdańsk, Pierwoszyno, Kosakowo, Tczew and Malbork. This year the choirs will have the same possibilities. Our goal is to widen the range of the festival for the whole Pomeranian Province and share the event with the inhabitants of our region who don’t have the same access to cultural offer as the inhabitants of Tricity. Mundus Cantat Sopot offers an excellent opportunity to compare world’s vocal traditions and to get to know songs from different regions, which are often exotic for us.

This year the final concert will be graced by the performance of the group Audiofeels. In their work the artists use a method Vocal Play. The group consists of eight vocalists, who enhance a cappella music with imitations of the sounds of musical instruments and with adding some improvisation. All the artists come from the Poznan Academic Choir UAM.

In this year’s edition the competition presentations will be evaluated by the jury made-up of:
• Prof. Marcin Tomczak, the pro-vice chancellor of the Gdansk Music Academy dealing with students and artistic affairs, the artistic director and the conductor or
Academic Choir of the Gdansk University – the chairman of the jury
• Prof. Juris Klavins from the Music Academy in Ryga, the conductor of the Latvian University Choir
• Prof. Krzysztof Szydzisz from the Music Academy in Bydgoszcz, the conductor of the Chamber Choir of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan.
• Prof. Anna Fiebig, the conductor of the Sopot Chamber Choir Continuo
